Speed of Website – Important Consideration of Any Web Hosting Provider

Posted by – September 23, 2010

One of the first things any individual would like for his website is the speed of the site. Though people would like their sites to be running full steam, every time when someone clicks on their site, getting this right is a headache alright for a lot of web hosting companies. One of the major concerns for these companies in this case is the bandwidth crunch.

With so many websites being launched over the Internet, server space is a major constraint for a lot of web hosting companies. Most companies do have their dedicated lines, but even they can accommodate only a certain number of requests. At most times, you would find that it is a tough call balancing between good services and the price.

The dampener here is the pricing. People do not want to pay a lot for the web hosting services. With this fact being given, you would find that companies at times tend to less diligent towards the services they provide. There are some web hosting services providers who are doing a good job, but from an aggregate perspective, you would find that this space is crowded with a lot of participants.

Now, here is a factor that severely impedes speed of a website. People tend to opt for cheap web hosting services at most times, forgetting the fact that cheaper web hosting services would only give them certain benefits. Worse still, individuals go a step ahead and design some really complex websites. They take the extra effort to load the website with a lot of supplementary things, which the website could have done well without.

In a nutshell, it can be said that people would definitely want their website to run at full steam. With this being said, the problems in the hands of web hosting companies, is not a pleasant one indeed. At least for now, no answers are being found!

Hostgator hosting company provides the best website speed with 99.9% server uptime.Get more information on Hostgator Hosting Services HERE.

Web Hosting : Linux vs. Windows

Posted by – September 21, 2010

The Basics of Linux & Windows : Linux (and its close relation
Unix) and Windows 2000 (and its close cousin Windows NT) are
types of software (known as operating systems) that web servers
use to do the kind of things that web servers do. You do not
need to know any real detail of either to make a decision as to
which you need but here a few guidelines.

Just because you use a windows desktop PC doesn’t mean you have
to opt for Windows web hosting (and the reverse is true as
well). The operating system you use on your desktop has little
to do with your choice of web hosts. As long as you understand
how to use your FTP or web publishing software, your can use
either operating system.

But what is important is that you know what you want your
website to do and what you want to offer on it. This is what
will ultimately help determine the type of web hosting that will
work best for you. As mentioned earlier, interactive websites
usually rely on ASP, PHP, or Perl type languages.

Linux Web Hosting or Windows 2000 Web Hosting ? Make your Choice
!

When it comes to Web hosting, Linux has, for some time, been
widely considered the best OS for Web servers. It’s typically
found to be the most reliable, stable and efficient system and,
as such, it’s commonly used for the demanding environment of Web
and mail servers. Indeed,Most of the clients websites of aalpha
NET runs on the Linux OS precisely because of this traditional
stability.

The million-dollar question is what application are you looking
to use for your hosting? Consider the tools and scripting
languages you plan to use – if you use PHP, Perl or MySQL, Linux
is the way forward. If apps are Microsoft-specific, then Windows
is what you need.

If your site, like most web sites, is what might be termed
“brochure-ware” then Linux servers are ideal. By brochure-ware I
mean a site that offers the kind of information that in the past
might have been provided on paper in the form of brochures,
newsletters or data sheets. Brochure-ware sites will offer some
interaction through enquiry forms and can certainly incorporate
online purchasing and other routine e-commerce functions.

If however your site incorporates an online searchable database
or interactive chat facilities then Windows 2000 or NT will be a
better bet in most cases. It will cost a bit more but you’ll get
that back in reduced development time and simply better
functionality.

The following are the advantages of using Linux based web server
compared to Windows based web server :

Stable: Linux/Unix operating systems has traditionally been
believed to be very stable and robust. A web site housed on a
Linux operating system will have very high up-time (of the order
of 99.9%). Of course, other factors such as power supply,
network admin skills, and network load etc. also matter when it
comes to maintaining the system uptime.

Low cost of ownership: The Linux OS comes free of cost (or at
very insignificant cost, usually cost of distribution). Also, it
has full fledged server, and desk top applications that comes
free along with the OS. These server applications (such as FTP,
Web Server, DNS Server, File Server etc.) being free, are also
very stable.

Ease of use : When it comes to web hosting, it is easy to host
on Linux web servers. The process of uploading and hosting is
almost same for both Linux and Windows web servers. If you want
to use a Windows based tool such as Front Page for uploading a
web site on to a Linux based web server, make sure that the
Front Page extensions are enabled. This is only required if you
are uploading using HTTP feature (http://www.yourwebsite.com) of
Front Page. Front Page also makes it possible to upload a web
site using FTP. You need to select ftp://www.yourwebsite.com for
up loading using front page FTP option. Note that if you select
“Front Page Extensions” during web site design, you must enable
Front Page extensions on a Linux web server also. These days,
all Linux web servers are coming with installable Front Page
extensions, and this should pose no problem for hosting on a
Linux platform.

You can use almost all types of file extensions (or scripts)
when using Linux web server. Commonly, the following extensions
are supported: .cgi, .html, .htm, .pl, .php, .shtml, .xml, and
others. Basically it means that you can host web sites that use
different types of server side scripts including .cgi, .pl,
..php, and .asp (with plug-in).

Easy to move between hosts : A web site designed to be hosted on
a Linux based web server can be hosted on a Windows web server
easily, where as the reverse is not always true.

Most widely used : Linux/Unix based web hosting is most widely
used compared to Windows based web hosting.

Scalability : A web site is dynamic. Usually, a web site starts
with a few pages of html and grows over a period of time to suit
the customers requirements. It is preferable to design a web
site keeping this requirements in mind. A web site designed for
compatibility with a Linux/Unix based web server meets the
scalability requirement easily without making any site wide
design changes.

On the downside, Linux based web server is not fully compatible
with Microsoft technologies. If you are using any specialized
applications or VB for development of your web site, it is
preferable to host with a Windows based web server.

Web Server Hosting Types

Posted by – September 18, 2010

There are different types of hosting services that you can choose from depending on what type of web development and web site that you want to host.

Dial-Up Access Hosting – This is the most basic access/hosting service and these providers also provides a web page for hosting your site. Dial-up access hosting was the first hosting available and is still around. Most ISP’s specialize in just internet access and it’s rare that you will see an ISP do both. These companies make their money off of providing access to the Internet.

Development Hosting – Web site developers are buying their own servers and offering independent hosting services for their clients. This is called development hosting in which they provide web development services along with a host server located at their place of business. The consumer gets charged for the development and the maintenance of the web-site.

Web-Hosting ISP’s. – These are companies that specialize in hosting business web sites. There is no dial up access needed and site owners access their pages via File Transfer Protocol (FTP). This is what the majority of small businesses use to put their site information on the internet. Other services are also included in the Web Hosting ISP package depending on their service plans.

These types of hosting plans are usually for corporations that need a lot of bandwidth to run their web applications. These companies run T1 access lines for big packets of internet data and have multiple connections to an internet backbone. They have fully staffed data processing facilities and the prices are substantial for using these types of services.

Corporate/Industrial Hosting – Companies like Hewlett Packard, Dell or IBM, run the server infrastructure for most of these host companies.

The SOHO business owner will usually need the Web-Hosting ISP services. It is the middle ground between the basic and advanced services.

Advice and suggestions on web hosting companies?

Posted by – September 17, 2010

I’ve been looking for a webhost to host 3 different sties I have under 1 plan. I don’t need a dedicated server or anything big and fancy (yet).

I use Yahoo now for one of my sites but they don’t support hosting multiple domains on one plan. That is a must for me.

So far I’m considering BlueHost, DreamHost, and IPowerWeb. Any thoughts on them? Are there any other hosts I should consider?

Are there any good web hosting catalogs with user reviews? I looked for user reviews web hosting providers and I didn’t have much luck.
@#Red and others:

I will not click affiliate links or any links which appear to have referal code.

I’ve been with Host Gator for years.
Unlimited domain hosting only $24.95 a month.

24 hour customer service, etc.
No affiliation. Just like them.

What’s a Good Web Hosting site for Game Reviews?

Posted by – September 14, 2010

I’m looking into making my own game review/news website and would like to know what free web hosting site would be the best to use to make a good looking site. I want an easy to use site such as an IGN looking site. If anyone has any idea I’d apprechiate it

You just need to get hosting which already includes a domain name (like yourwebsite.com), and a way to design the website. And there are some pretty cheap ones which include everything you need.

I recommend one of these: http://www.top3hosts.com

iPage has the best offer right now.
Their standard price is $84/year ($6.95) but they have
a 50% sale, one year of hosting for $42.00.

Their plan includes:

Unlimited disk space
Unlimited bandwidth
Free domain name

Price: $42/year ($3.50)

They have one of the most popular hosting platforms, which currently hosts over a million websites. They’re also one of the oldest hosting companies, founded in 1998.

They include a free point & click online site builder so you can create a website without any programming (easily, just by drag and drop) or you could install WordPress (they include easy, one click install from their control panel), choose a theme that you like, and start adding content.

They also have a great custom control panel with OneClick installs of all the popular software like WordPress, Joomla, Forums, Chat, Galleries, Online stores and a lot more.

Web Hosting Advice And Information – How You Can Find A Cheap Web Hosting Package

Posted by – September 13, 2010

All webmasters will at some point face one question: how will I find a good and cheap web hosting provider?

The web hosting business is saturated with web hosting companies competing for your business. You’ll find everything from huge companies hosting hundreds of thousands of web sites, to the small reseller operating out of Mom’s garage. So how can you make an educated decision with all those options?

All web site hosting companies tend to have some similarities, although their main sales arguments are normally focused on two things; cost and bandwidth. A lot of the time people go for a sales pitch like that. Getting something that’s inexpensive is desirable to most folks, and if it seems to come with some great extras too, then all the better!

So if you are choosing between a web hosting company that’s offering a cheap web hosting plan with 50GB bandwidth for $10 per month, and a different hosting company that promises you a hosting plan with 500GB a month for five dollars, a lot of people will foolishly pick the second option. However, it is this type of logic that leads to disaster for many web hosting clients.

Sure, it’s great to save a few bucks – although do you believe a web hosting company is going to give great support and reliable service when you pay them almost nothing? The old saying “You get what you pay for” is very truthful, and the complete truth is you’re far more apt to receive great service if you keep clear of the really cheap web page hosting packages.

That being said, it is also true that the service quality can differ a lot betweeen web site hosting companies in the same price range. In truth, the one way of making sure you keep clear of the bad apples is to do a little of your own research. Check out places such as Web Hosting Talk to find out for yourself what real customers feel about the web hosting provider they use.

While there isn’t a web hosting company that will be liked by everybody, you will find that some have a lot more complaints than others. I have done extensive research on this and learned that while some web hosting providers may have mostly good reviews, other providers have mostly negative reviews. In conclusion: when looking for an affordable web hosting service, keep clear of the cheapest offers and do some research before you sign up.
